Dr Ratan Naval Tata holds a B.Sc. (Architecture) degree with
structural engineering from Cornell University, and has completed the
Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School. He joined
the Tata Group in 1962. As Chairman of Tata Industries Limited since
1981, he was responsible for transforming the company into a Group
strategy think-tank and a promoter of new ventures in high technology
businesses. In 1991, Mr Tata was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons
Limited, the holding company of the Tata Entities and currently holds
the chairmanships of major Tata companies. During his tenure, the
Groups revenues have grown over ten-fold to annualized Group revenues
of $62.5 billion. Mr Tata is on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank
of India, a Member of the Prime Minister"s Council on Trade and
Industry besides being a member of various global councils. He is also
the chairman of two of the largest private sector promoted
philanthropic trusts in India. The Government of India honored Mr Tata
with its second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.
Earlier, in 2000, he had been awarded the Padma Bhushan. He has also
been conferred an honorary doctorate in business administration by the
Ohio State University, an honorary doctorate in technology by the
Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, an honorary doctorate in
science by the University of Warwick, and an honorary fellowship by
the London School of Economics. He also serves on the International
Investment Council, South Africa, the International Business Advisory
Council of the British Government, the Asia-Pacific Advisory Committee
to the Board of Directors of the New York Stock Exchange and the
International Advisory Boards of the Mitsubishi Corporation, the
American International Group and JP Morgan Chase. Under Mr. Tata's
guidance, Tata Consultancy Services went public and Tata Motors was
listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
In 1998, Tata Motors introduced his brainchild, the Tata Indica. He
also first suggested building a car that could sell for 100,000 Indian
rupees ($2,000), and the first Tata Nano was delivered in India in
Mumbai on July 17th, 2009. He passionately advocates the use of
science and technology to serve the needs of the ordinary people of
the world.
Dr. Ratan Tata comes from one of the most illustrious families of
India, which has contributed much to India's progress in the last 2
centuries. He and his forefathers are known for their legendary
philanthropy, including their historic role in founding, in 1904, the
Indian Institute of Science , an Institute which has educated many
outstanding scientists and engineers who have played and currently
play significant leadership roles in India and all over the world.
